Qualification overview and objective
The objective of this qualification is to support a role in the workplace. It is designed for learners who currently hold a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a security officer/guard and need to be brought up to date with the new licence-linked qualifications requirements.
Entry requirements
To register for this qualification, learners must:
- Be aged 16 and over.
- Hold a current and valid for 12 months First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate
- Meet the English language requirements
- Be willing to complete the distance learning prior to taking the exams
First Aid or Emergency First Aid.
Learners should, as a minimum, have achieved an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification Learners should present their First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate* to their training provider before they start training. This certificate* must be valid for at least 12 months from the course start date.
*All First Aid training must be completed and passed prior to the commencement of the security training.
Language Prerequisites
Learners should, as a minimum, have language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening equivalent to the following.
- A B2 Level qualification on the Home Office’s list of recognised English tests and qualifications.
- An ESOL qualification at (Level 1) on the Ofqual register taken in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
- Functional Skills Level 1 in English
Training centres must retain this information for all learners against all four competencies for a minimum of three years in line with the retention of assessment evidence requirements.
Course Length
The total qualification time (TQT) for this qualification is 9 hours, and of this, 7 hours are guided learning hours (GLH). Please note that 3 hours is the minimum contact time (the time you will spend in the classroom) as stipulated by the SIA which is applicable if self-study is applied. If self-study isn’t applied, then the MCT for this qualification will be 7 hours. Self-study for the Understand terror threats and the role of the security operative in the event of a threat learning outcome refers only to the use of authorised action counters terrorism (ACT) e learning. Self-study for the Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry unit refers only to the use of authorised ACT E-learning.
How is this course evaluated by a multiple choice exam and video recorded assessment.
Principles of Working as a Security Officer in the Private Security Externally set and marked multiple choice question (MCQ) examination made up of 28 questions with passmark of 71% 45 minutes.
Assessment = Know how to conduct effective search procedures Demonstrate how to search people and their personal possessions – Video recorded in front of the trainer and the evidence sent to the awarding body.
